Research Associate Professor, Co-Director of Data Science for the Public Good Young Scholars Program

Gizem Korkmaz is an Associate Professor at the Social and Decision Analytics Division (SDAD) of the Biocomplexity Institute and Initiative at the University of Virginia. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on social and economic networks, involving mathematical and computational modeling, and empirical analysis. 

Gizem is the co-director of UVA’s Data Science for the Public Good Young Scholars Program. Through funds from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Young Scholars program was launched in four land-grant universities (Virginia Tech, Virginia State, Iowa State, and Oregon State) in the summer of 2020. Gizem co-led the deployment of the program in these universities (adapted to a virtual format due to COVID-19), and their coordination, and supported and oversaw activities of faculty and students. She spearheaded the launch the Young Scholars program in the municipalities of Istanbul and Ankara, marking its first global expansion in Turkey.
